Commercials

When I was reading the blog prompt for this week, I was trying to figure out how I would make this topic stretch to 300 words. I sat here confused for a while and just didn’t know where to begin, because once I start writing I don’t like to stop. So, to begin I will talk about my feeling of commercials in general. Commercials are a way for people to advertise anything they want to the audience they want based on what network they chose to advertise to. Although I feel like there are too many commercials, I feel like they are necessary. Without commercials I would never know the latest movies, or specials that restaurants may have. Commercials make it easy to keep all of us informed, while making money from their advertisement.

While watching Law and Order SVU, I experienced over 40 different commercials over the hour long period. To my knowledge law and order is geared towards female teens and older women. This show is drama based and that is what most girls are into. Out of all the commercials, the M & M Valentine’s Day commercial aired the most. I believe this was the top commercial, because Valentine’s Day is only 2 weeks away. Also, because this TV show is geared towards women they are hoping for more sells. Another commercial that aired a lot was the taco bell super bowl commercial. This obviously was another repetitive commercial, because the super bowl is coming up this Sunday. When commercials are based on a holiday or event as the date moves closer, the commercials begin to air more. Many people will be hosting super bowl parties, so to continuously show these commercials is a way to promote people to come and buy taco bell for their party. The taco bell and M & M’ s Valentine’s Day commercial both are produced based on an event. Well that’s the end of this blog…

  1. Very good at identifying the audience for the tv show you were watching! I would agree with you that women are the main target in shows like Law and Order, CSI, or NCSI.

Also, it is true that commercials and advertisements take advantage of events and holidays to sell their products. I have noticed when flipping through my dvr from shows around Christmas-time, they are filled with winter and holiday themes.

Commercials are a necessary evil aren't they? On one hand, they give us information about what is new or what deals or specials there are. But on the other hand, they TELL you what you should be spending your money on, right? They seduce us into believing a myth about a product...
